Grant Impact

What do USA Fellows do with their awards?

United States Artists awarded its first 50 $50,000 USA Fellowships in December 2006, recognizing a total of 54 American artists (including four working as collaboratives). Six months later we asked the first USA Fellows how they had used the funds, through the first of a series of brief surveys designed to build our understanding of the impact this direct support has on living artists and their creative work.

Here’s how the USA Fellows for 2006 say they’ve used the funds as of June 2007:

83% develop a new project
69% advance or finish an existing project
62% purchase art supplies
60% travel related to their work
48% cover personal expenses (housing, meals, etc.)
38% organize a presentation of their work
36% volunteer time or resources to an arts-related cause
26% cover health-care expenses
24% receive education or training
17% travel not related to their work
17% subsidize time for other pursuits

About 20% reported one or two ways in which they used the USA Fellowship funds. Another 40% of USA Fellows reported a total of three to five ways, and the remaining 40% reported six or more.

This report is based on responses from 42 USA Fellows (84%) for 2006 (including three collaboratives) and was prepared by Thomas E. Backer, PhD, president, Human Interaction Research Institute.

Donor Profile:Eli and Edythe Broad

"We have learned a lot from listening and talking to artists. They see things differently. Their work is what's going on. They may not be able to predict the future, but they make statements that say where it's going, and it often does."
