Peter D. and Julie Fisher Cummings

Julie Fisher and Peter D. Cummings share a profound belief in the importance of the arts and arts education for our children. They divide their time among Detroit, which is Julie’s hometown; South Florida, where Peter’s business is based; and New York, where Julie recently went back to school. Working toward her master's in social work at Columbia University, she combines her academic work with a full schedule of philanthropic activities. As lead director of the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation, she devotes considerable time to setting the priorities for this recently funded foundation, which includes arts and culture among its major areas of focus.

From 1995 through 2006 Julie was a member of the board of trustees of the Cranbrook Educational Community in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, from which she graduated in 1973. From 1996 through 2007 she served on the board of the Council of Michigan Foundations, with a term as chairman from 2005 to 2006. From 1998 through 2005 she was a trustee of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. She continues today to serve on the board of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan.

Peter is a real estate developer who started as a journalist in the early 1970s in his birthplace, Montreal, Canada. A graduate of Yale University (BA, 1968) and the University of Toronto (MA, 1969), he moved to south Florida in 1975 and built a real estate management and development company that is now active throughout the Southeast. His passion is music—almost all kinds of music but classical music in particular. As chairman of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) from 1999 through 2003 and an active board member to this day, he spearheaded the Orchestra Place project, which rejuvenated the neighborhood surrounding historic Orchestra Hall with a $225 million mixed-use development, including a new high school of the arts. In addition to serving on the DSO board, he is a board member of the New York Philharmonic and the League of American Orchestras and a member of the Madison Council of the Library of Congress.

Julie and Peter have three children, all in the real estate business, and three grandchildren, who live in Florida.
