Elizabeth LeCompte’s international reputation for innovative and experimental theatrical direction spans thirty years, in which she has led the field in evocative and technologically sophisticated uses of sound, lighting, and video for the stage. As a founding member and director of the Wooster Group, she has created film, video, and performance pieces. Her work as a director, designer, and choreographer has been inspired by classical dramatic texts and contemporary sociopolitical trends. LeCompte has received a MacArthur Fellowship, numerous Obie Awards, an NEA Distinguished Artists Fellowship for Lifetime Achievement in American Theater, and France’s highest arts award, the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres.
