Heather McHugh is revered as one of the finest living American poets and “a wordslinger of the first order.” Since receiving her MA from the University of Denver in 1972, she has been writing and teaching in graduate programs around the country, including the Iowa Writers Workshop and the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of more than 10 books, including volumes of poetry, translation, and literary essays. Her poems have appeared in many journals and anthologies, includingOxford’s 20th-Century Poetry and Poeticsand theOxford Book of American Poetry. Her most recent collection,Eyeshot, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. McHugh was the chancellor of the Academy of Poets for five years, and she is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has lived in Seattle since 1984, when she was appointed the Milliman Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at the University of Washington.
