“It is my intention to make space for those who the world was not made for, and create radical care within the process of the work.”
Mei Ann Teo makes art at the intersection of artistic, civic, and contemplative practice in order to move culture towards collective liberation, championing the multiplicity of perspectives of queer, global majority, trans, and femme people. As a director and dramaturg Teo collaborates with performer and generator artists including Madeline Sayet (Where We Belong; Woolly Mammoth’s National Tour), Bryonn Bain (Lyrics from Lockdown; National Black Theatre, Belgium’s Festival De Liege), Jillian “Gogo” Walker (SKiNFoLK: An American Show, Bushwick Starr), and has performed in Diana Oh’s A Rare Bird (Breaking the Binary Fest). As a maker, Teo has devised documentary works in communities ranging from conservative Christians (Red Books) to factory workers in China (Meng Xiang). Teo’s generative works based in contemplative practice have been commissioned by the Prelude Fest (hold) and Beijing International Festival (Labyrinth: Defining Humanity). As a director, Teo’s work ranges from site-specific and immersive (Walden at Theatreworks Hartford, 7 Minutes at Waterwell) to an all Asian True West at People’s Light, and at venues such as The Shed, The Public, and internationally, such as a twenty-five Chinese city tour of Dim Sum Warriors: the Musical. Teo has served as faculty at Harvard, NYU, Hampshire College, and Carnegie Mellon. Formerly the Artistic Director of Musical Theatre Factory and the Associate Artistic Director and Director of New Work at OSF, Teo currently serves as the Artistic Director, New Work at Pink Fang.
