Sarah Crowell is a dancer, choreographer, arts educator and nonprofit leader who creates powerful collaborative experiences through movement, spoken word, intimate storytelling and scathing political commentary, re-imagining the world through the lens of justice. Crowell is a Black/biracial queer woman who grew up in three countries and understands intimately the power of bridging across differences in order to survive.
As Artistic Director and Executive Director of Destiny Arts Center, a Bay Area arts organization whose mission is to inspire and ignite social change through the arts, Sarah inspired generations of youth for thirty years. She founded and co-directed the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company, which was the subject of two documentary films and winner of the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.
She facilitates arts integration and team-building sessions with artists, educators, and nonprofit and corporate leaders. She is the recipient of multiple arts and community awards. She is also a four-time finalist for a Tony Award for Excellence in Theater Education.
Her decades-long performance career included work with Impulse Jazz Dance Company (Boston) and Dance Brigade (San Francisco).
Most recently she has worked with many organizations including the Othering and Belonging Institute, SKYWATCHERS, and Embodiment Project as a creative collaborator, facilitator, curriculum writer, and conference curator. In August 2025, Crowell accepted the position of Artistic Director of Dance Mission Theater.
