“My practice weaves story, movement, sound, digital worlds, ritual frameworks, and theatrical architecture into shape-shifting forms that hold the past, present, and future all at once.”
Ty Defoe (Giizhig) is a proud citizen of the Oneida Nation and the Anishinaabe Tribe, moving through the world as a writer, interdisciplinary artist, and sovereign storyteller. As an Indigiqueer story-trickster, Defoe weaves together worlds where liberation, resilience, and Mother Earth form the backbone of their creative process. Their work glitters with interconnection, braiding ancestral knowledge, futurist sensibilities, and community-rooted practices into writing, performances, installations, and story architectures that honor Indigenous and decolonial futures. A Grammy Award–winning artist, they have received numerous prestigious fellowships and honors, including support from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, MacDowell, Sundance Institute, First Peoples Fund, and Pop Culture Collaborative’s Trans Futurist Fellowship. Their accolades also include the Jonathan Larson Award and the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award. Their play Firebird Tattoo appears in the Methuen Drama Book of Trans Plays for the Stage (Bloomsbury), affirming them as a vital voice in contemporary trans/Indigiqueer arts. Their practice spans rural communities, Broadway productions, and the metaverse, always centering relationality, reciprocity, and collective world-building. They are the co-founder of Indigenous Direction and an active member of All My Relations Collective. They also serve as a Professor of Practice at ASU, Writer-in-Residence at PACE, and the Olga Denison Scholar at CMU, roles that allow them to advance Indigenous creative innovations, technologies, and mentorship. Defoe likes space, mood rings, and the many constellations — cosmic and communal — that guide their work.
